Sweetwater Creek

Exploring the natural beauty of Georgia State Parks, including Sweetwater Creek, can be a rewarding experience. Georgia State Parks offer many natural wonders, and the 2,549 acre Sweetwater Creek is one of the most popular destinations.

Located west near the Atlanta area in Douglas County, Sweetwater Creek (only 15 miles from Downtown Atlanta) is one of my favorite Georgia State Parks to visit. The beautiful creek is a great area to have a picnic while observing the flowing waters. Visiting Georgia State Parks like Sweetwater Creek allows you to get close enough to dip your feet in the cool moving waters.

Fishing is very popular at the 215 acres reservoir. Fishing supplies can be purchased at the bait shop located at the park.

The Park has Campsites, Bait Shop, Boat Ramp, Visiting Center, Fishing Areas, a Museum, and easy to follow hiking trails.

Note: Swimming is not allowed at Sweetwater Creek

You will find unique old-time ruins of an old Mill called the New Manchester Textile Mill that once operated on the creek back in the 19th century. Old bullet holes can be found on the walls of the old mill from the Civil War as well. The park will often have scheduled tours where you can get a closer look at the mill where a tour guide will inform you of the history of the area, including its connection to Georgia State Parks and Sweetwater Creek.

You will be surprised to learn that a few famous movies and television shows were filmed at this Park such as:

  • Hunger Games
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • No Good Deed
  • Atlanta (television series)
  • Killing Season
  • Cobra Kai (television series)

Reservations

The best time of the year to visit the park is during the warm months. Renting fishing boats, canoes, kayaks, standup paddle-boards, and pedal boats is available year-round. If you are interested in reserving a camp site or a picnic area at Georgia State Park Sweetwater Creek, you can place reservations on the GA State Park website.

For boat, kayak, and paddle-board rentals, you will need to go to the Vistor Center or the Bait Shop.

Additional Amenities

  • Bait Shop (Fishing supplies can be purchased)
  • 2 Play areas for kids to burn energy
  • 10 Yurts | These get booked pretty fast and have become popular on social media.
  • Fishing docks
  • Outdoor fitness area
  • A Gift Shop
  • 7 Picnic Shelters
  • Weddings can be preformed at the Park with prior approval.

Parking

My main suggestion when coming to the Park, is to try to get there early on weekends and holidays for parking. Parking can get a little tight during those times.

You will find various areas to park at this location right when you drive in. There is a $5 parking fee and an annual pass is valid for all State Parks in Georgia for $50 for 1-12 people. A larger party of 13-30 people in a vehicle, will be $30 a day or $75 annual pass, 31 people of more to a vehicle will be $70 a day or $250 annual pass.
